Airdrie might be known for its rapid growth and suburban energy, but tucked between the new subdivisions are some genuinely stunning locations for outdoor photography. After exploring Rocky View County with a camera, here are the five spots I keep coming back to.
1. Nose Creek Regional Park
Stretching through the heart of Airdrie, Nose Creek Park offers a blend of natural riverside scenery, open meadows, and mature trees that provide beautiful dappled light in the morning and golden hour glow in the evening. The creek itself adds a dynamic element to family or couple portraits, and the varying terrain means there's always a fresh angle to explore.
Best time to go: Early morning for misty light, or 90 minutes before sunset for warm golden tones.
2. Chinook Winds Regional Park
This sprawling park in southwest Airdrie features open fields, a spray park, and excellent views of the Rocky Mountain foothills on a clear day. The wide open spaces are perfect for lifestyle family sessions, where kids can run freely while you capture genuine candid moments rather than forced smiles.
Best time to go: Late afternoon in spring and fall when the sky turns dramatic. Avoid peak summer midday — the light gets harsh.
3. Downtown Airdrie Heritage Corridor
The older buildings along Main Street and the surrounding heritage block offer a rustic, authentic backdrop that's rare in newer Alberta communities. Brick walls, vintage signage, and the warm tones of historic storefronts create a beautiful contrast for headshots and personal branding sessions.
Best time to go: Early weekend mornings before the shops open — you'll have the streets to yourself.
4. Rocky View County Countryside
Just a short drive from Airdrie, the rolling farmland and open skies of Rocky View County deliver the quintessential Alberta experience. Prairie landscapes, old fences, and that enormous Alberta sky create images that are unmistakably local. This is where I go for engagement sessions and extended family portraits that need to feel epic.
Best time to go: Sunrise or sunset — the golden and blue hours are extraordinary here.
5. Balzac & Crossfield Rural Roads
The quiet gravel roads and canola fields between Airdrie and Crossfield are a hidden gem. In summer, the bright yellow canola fields are breathtaking; in autumn, the harvested fields have a quiet, moody beauty that works perfectly for graduation and milestone sessions.
Best time to go: Canola is in full bloom from late June to mid-July. Harvest golden tones peak in September.
